Hi. My name's Alex. I quit my day job a few years back to make music for a living, but that's not really important. What's important is that from March 2013 to March 2014, I'm going to volunteer the world. This isn't just going to be some post-college sabbatical to find myself, or a voyage of five-star luxury hotels and sightseeing. I'm traveling the world for a purpose: to volunteer in an orphanage in ten countries for one month each.
But beyond just volunteering, I'll bring my camera along and interview the children and their social workers, film the experience and adventure, and put it together to make a cohesive documentary about the lives of the incredible children and their amazing caretakers. I'm also going to take boatloads of pictures and write an in-depth book about the journey in hopes of raising awareness and action around the world. After the trip, I'll turn around and sell the documentary and books and give all of the money from their sales to each of the orphanages where I volunteer. And I want you to come along with me.
I'm doing this because there are millions of orphans around the world, living in abject poverty, whose living conditions are improved all the more by individuals who volunteer their time and effort. Making an honest documentary and writing a book detailing the volunteer experience - the lives of the children, the social workers who care for them, and the story of their lives told directly by them - will hopefully compel others to embark on a trek all their own, or in another way lend a helping hand. If nothing else, it will be quite a journey.
I'm also embarking on this expedition because volunteering, the unknown, and new experiences make me feel fully alive. Because when I volunteered in two orphanages in Kenya in 2010, I promised myself I could've wave goodbye unless I would one day return and wave hello. I feel that I have a chance to give back to a world and my fellow brothers and sisters that have allowed me to humbly live a wonderful life. I don't plan on squandering that opportunity. I believe it is our duty, as responsible human beings and stewards for the good, to use the energy in our means to help ensure every orphaned child in the world is cared for. Together, we can positively influence the lives of innumerable children around the globe and help provide each with caring support, humanitarian aid, and the ability to pursue their dreams.
Life is as an adventure. I hope you'll join me.
peace.love.respect.,
alex
